Strategic planning based on demographic projections of school demand
Publication . Pimentel, Teresa; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH)
As partners, municipal and school authorities are faced with the challenge of strategically planning the education of their young citizens. When we refer to strategic planning, we envision it divided into three stages: analysis or diagnosis of the system; policy formulation; and action plan. The first stage deals with the diagnosis of the existing reality by quantifying the population that is going to be educated. This quantification has been developed based on a cross-sectional analysis. We chose to present a methodology based on a longitudinal analysis, namely the reconstruction of the educational trajectories of individuals of the same cohort, thus applying the principles of demographic analysis to school events (Bandeira, 2007). This methodology allows us not only to analyse current educational trends but also to project the impact of maintaining enrolment and education rates in the 2025 timeframe, based on projection scenarios of the population within the normal age for attending school. Therefore, we took the municipality of Castelo Branco as the unit of analysis and applied the principles of demographic analysis to school events. As a result, and despite the limitations identified throughout the study, we think the longitudinal analysis of the school trajectories of students coupled with population projections allows us to have a better understanding of the possible and/or probable futures regarding school demand in Castelo Branco.

Young Offenders’ Insights into their Experiences in Accessing TV and Press News in a Liberty-Depriving Context
Publication . Carvalho, Maria João Leote; Serrão, Juliana; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH)
This paper seeks to give voice to young offenders placed in custodial institutions in Portugal, aiming to discuss their insights into their experiences in accessing TV and press news in a liberty-depriving context, and how through their choices they (re)view their own life trajectories and attitudes towards the institution and the juvenile justice system. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study focused on a population that tends to gain the media’s attention, but their own interpretation of social matters has rarely been heard. Through informed consent, a random sample was collected involving 150 participants, of both sexes, between 12 and 21 years of age. The findings pointed up how news contents were mainly understood as essential windows to the world: for many participants, reading or watching news was a process sustained by the need for maintaining contact with their communities and the world outside custody. Not only was their experience in the juvenile system clearly reflected in their discussion about the news, they also strengthened the relation of some news content with their attitude towards their families, peers and institutions. The results reveal they were particularly interested in news on two issues - children in danger and crime -, and through the analysis young offenders made of their choices, they (re)viewed their life trajectories and projected into an aftercare future.
Young Offenders’ Interests and Motivations Related to Accessing TV and Press News
Publication . Carvalho, Maria João; Serrão, Juliana; Centro Interdisciplinar de Ciências Sociais (CICS.NOVA - NOVA FCSH); University of Wales
This paper aims to discuss how young offenders placed in Portuguese custodial institutions look at TV and press news, and what interests, motivations and habits they have in accessing news. Based on a questionnaire survey and individual interviews, the study involved 150 participants, of both sexes, between 12 and 21 years of age. It focused on a population that tends to gain the media’s attention, but their own interpretation of social matters has rarely been heard. The results reveal they were particularly interested in news on two issues: children in danger, and crime. News are regarded as a crucial link to the outside world, and through the analysis young offenders made of their choices, they (re)viewed their life trajectories and projected into an aftercare future. Many had direct contact with journalists in a double sense, ‘delinquent actor’ vs. ‘social actor’, and diametrically opposed meanings emerged from their experiences.
Segregação Residencial e Discriminação na Área Metropolitana de Lisboa:
Publication .
