Throughout history, the forest has generated spiritual and artistic concepts and representations, allowed economic and social uses and acquired utilitarian and playful functions. Crossing different periods and contexts, this book aims to reflect on innovative themes ranging from representation to forest management and enjoyment. The narrative, intentionally polyhedral, explores the representations of forests, woods and groves in the stained glass of national production from the medieval and modern times, as well as in the faience from the 16th to the 18th centuries. At the same time, the exploitation and regeneration of forest resources is analyzed, considering territorial management, respective or land use planning and fruition, enjoying natural elements from the end of the Middle Ages to the 19th century. And, finally, it addresses the relationship and meanings that are established between royal hunting and leisure in the royal preserves at the end of the constitutional monarchy. Intentionally, we tried to work on chronological periods prior to the great ecological scourges triggered by World Wars and the world demographic boom of the 20th century, from which the relationship with the forest changed exponentially. Currently, in a paradigm of ecological-environmental reflection, it is considered that the world forest heritage is at risk and, as a result of this unquestionable reality, the life of the planet, as we know it, is also jeopardisedk. With this work, in addition to bringing to light issues hitherto left in the shade about forest studies, betting on an innovative approach around the theme -forest, valuing it and remembering also the prominent place it has occupied over the centuries and which the 21st century is expected to value again.

Olhar o passado como um país estrangeiro talvez seja um desafio impossível quando consideramos a carga cultural, subjetiva e identitária presente na obra do historiador, ou em toda ação humana, afinal, esta é uma espécie que produz símbolos e valores, cultura, que os utilizam para todas as relações entre humanos e outras espécies. Talvez somente para um ´estrangeiro-alienigena´ seria possível uma etnografia das relações entre humanos e o mundo natural. Através dessa metáfora busca-se alcançar no passado exemplos de ações, práticas e processos de preservação, restauro, cuidado com o mundo natural para, trazendo as ao presente alargar o espaço de experiência, aumentando assim o horizonte de expectativa em relação a continuidade das condições de vida na terra. Looking at the past as a foreign country is perhaps an impossible challenge when we consider the cultural, subjective, identity burden present in the historian's work, or in general, in all human action, after all, this is a species that produces symbols and values, culture , who use them for all relationships between humans and other species. Perhaps only for an 'foreing-alien' would an ethnography of the relationships between humans and the natural world be possible. Through this metaphor, we seek to reach in the past examples of actions, practices and processes of preservation, restoration, care for the natural world, bringing them to the present to expand the space of experience, thus increasing the horizon of expectation in relation to the continuity of conditions of life on earth.
