Functional organization of cortico-cortical feedback originating from different laminar sources and how it is shaped by experience
Publication . Rajan, Radhika; Petreanu, Leopoldo
"Contextual modulations play a critical role in shaping visual perception.
Cortical feedback (FB) projections are thought to underlie these
modulations, but a comprehensive understanding requires knowledge of
the organizational principles governing different FB pathways. We used
wild-type as well as transgenic mouse lines and simultaneous dual-color
two-photon recordings of axons and somata to measure the functional
organization of cortico-cortical FB originating from different laminae of the
lateromedial (LM) visual area in primary visual cortex (V1). Our findings
reveal that although FB inputs from both layer (L) 2/3 and L5
predominantly project to L1 of V1, they exhibit different innervation
profiles in V1. Irrespective of visual experience and laminar origin, FB
inputs, on average, are retinotopically matched in V1. However, L5 FB
inputs conveyed information from more distal surround locations to V1
compared to those from L2/3, regardless of visual experience. The FB
projections exhibit spatiotemporal tuning-dependent retinotopic biases
that were influenced by visual experience.(...)"
