The typical as-built coarse and cube-oriented microstructure of Inconel® 625 parts fabricated via arc-based directed energy deposition (DED) induces anisotropic mechanical behavior, reducing the potential applications of arc-based DEDed Inconel® 625 in critical components. In this sense, the present work aimed to reduce the grain size and texture by applying an in situ interlayer hot forging (HF) combined with post-deposition heat treatments (PDHT). The produced samples were characterized through optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with electron backscatter diffraction, synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and Vickers microhardness. Also, a dedicated deformation tool was designed and optimized via a finite element method model considering the processing conditions and thermal cycle experienced by the material. It is shown that the in situ interlayer deformation induced a thermo-mechanical-affected zone (dynamic recrystallized + remaining deformation, with a height of ≈ 1.2 mm) at the bead top surface, which resulted in thinner aligned grains and lower texture index in relation to as-built DED counterpart. In addition, the effects of solution (1100 °C/ 1 h) and stabilization (980 °C/ 1 h) PDHTs on the Inconel® 625 HF-DEDed parts were also analyzed, which promoted fine and equiaxed static recrystallized grains without cube orientation, comparable to wrought material. Therefore, the HF-DED process significantly refined the typical coarse and highly oriented microstructure of Ni-based superalloys obtained by arc-based DED.
Micro wire and arc additive manufacturing (µ-WAAM)
Publication . Oliveira, J. P.; Gouveia, Francisco; Santos, Telmo G.; DEMI - Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; UNIDEMI - Unidade de Investigação e Desenvolvimento em Engenharia Mecânica e Industrial; Elsevier
In this work we explore the wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) process scale limits by using a wire diameter of 250 µm and about 2 mm stickout. This WAAM variant, named µ-WAAM, aims at competing with laser powder bed fusion technology, by enabling the fabrication of smaller parts with significantly higher deposition rates. The main issues of descaling the WAAM process are discussed and an acceptable parameter window to fabricate thin walls is presented. Several depositions were successfully performed with ASTMA 228 steel using a wire feed speed ranging from 75 to 90 mm/s, travel speed from 7 to 10 mm/s, a current intensity of 16 A RMS and power of ≈ 35 W RMS.

This paper presents a methodology that allows the numerical simulation of realistic sea waves, called WaveMIMO methodology, which is based on the imposition of transient discrete data as prescribed velocity on a finite volume computational model developed in Fluent software. These transient data are obtained by using the spectral wave model TOMAWAC, where the wave spectrum is converted into a series of free surface elevations treated and processed as wave propagation velocities in the horizontal (x) and vertical (z) directions. The processed discrete transient data of wave propagation velocity are imposed as boundary conditions of a wave channel in Fluent, allowing the numerical simulation of irregular waves with realistic characteristics. From a case study that reproduces the sea state occurring on March 31st, 2014, in Ingleses Beach, in the city of Florianópolis, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, it was concluded that the WaveMIMO methodology can properly reproduce realistic conditions of a sea state. In sequence, the proposed methodology was employed to numerically simulate the incidence of irregular realistic waves over an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter (WEC). From these results, the WaveMIMO methodology has proved to be a promising technique to numerically analyze the fluid-dynamic behavior of WECs subjected to irregular waves of realistic sea state on any coastal region where the device can be installed.
