Da Lusitânia a Portugal. Concepções do Espaço e do Poder das Raízes Clássicas à Tradição Humanista

Abstract

O presente estudo tem como objectivo proceder, num amplo arco cronológico e numa singular concepção de espaço e poder, a uma indagação em torno dos processos de criação, invenção, construção e pervivência de um topos - a Lusitânia/lusitanos - que se constitui como matéria estruturante da configuração identitária do território e do corpo social português. Investigação que consideramos inovadora ao intentar preencher os vários campos e formas da sua manifestação, passando pela expressiva diversidade da formação etimológica e filológica, a prolixidade semântica e conceptual, as diversas e intrincadas enunciações (trans)discursivas, a observação de processos de composição política, social, geográfica e identitária, enfim, o que terá permitido a perenidade desde a sua formulação geográfico-étnica administrativa (corónimo e etnónimo) até se sedimentar como figura memorial, nominal e alegórica (epónimo), de relevante valor constitutivo para Portugal. Para o efeito, introduzimos vários períodos subsequentes, numa diacronia que pretendeu acompanhar e fazer emergir as coerências nessa representação do tema. Desde o substrato pré-romano, às fontes clássicas, divididas em contextos específicos (República e Império), prosseguindo para as possibilidades de manutenção do topos numa fase de transição memorial, na adjudicação a uma construção erudita da configuração de unidade portuguesa, nas primeiras fontes medievais. Assistimos, depois, à evolução pela cronística tardo-medieval que sugere a posterior continuidade e compromisso, consumado no século XVI com André de Resende, da identificação entre Portugal e a Lusitânia. Por conseguinte, perfila-se o exame da sobrevivência do que designaríamos um mito/ideia - duplicidade expressiva que se sustenta por um lado, do carácter proeminentemente mitológico da identidade hispânica (mas também europeia) e, por outro, da intensa dualidade do binómio unidade/diversidade do panorama histórico peninsular que percorre o transcurso da Antiguidade, passando pela medievalidade e culminando no período moderno e que se revê consistentemente nas suas percepções e representações intelectuais, configurando, paralelamente, o peso da componente ideológica na construção do espaço. Mitos e ideias que se vinculam muito pelas mãos de uma elite cultural e política, o que também diz muito do que nos forma, identifica e conduz nos caminhos do tempo. Enfim, propomos um ensaio que versa sobre uma relação de tensão entre tradição e inovação, num determinado corpo social, matéria coincidente com o que se pretende que seja a formação da “alma” de uma nação, que se reconhece nessa inquietação como forma de se identificar e de se dar a conhecer.

This study aims to proceed, in a wide chronological arc and in a singular conception of space and power, to inquire about the processes of creation, invention, construction and survival of a topos - the Lusitania / Lusitanian - that constitutes as matter structure of the identity configuration of the Portuguese territory and social body. Research that we consider innovative in trying to fill the various fields and forms of its manifestation, passing by the expressive diversity of etymological and philological formation, the semantic and conceptual prolixity, the diverse and intricate (trans) discursive utterances, the observation of processes of political composition, social, geographical and identity, in short, which will have allowed the perpetuity from its administrative geographic-ethnic formulation (coronymous and ethnonymous) to sediment as memorial, nominal and allegorical (eponymous) figure, of relevant constitutive value for Portugal. To this end, we introduced several subsequent periods, in a diachrony that intended to accompany and bring out the coherences in this representation of the theme. From the pre-Roman substrate, to the classical sources, divided into specific contexts (Republic and Empire), continuing to the possibilities of maintaining the tops in a memorial transition phase, in the award to a scholarly construction of the Portuguese unit configuration, in the first medieval sources. Then we see the evolution by the late medieval chronistic that suggests the subsequent continuity and commitment, accomplished in the 16th century with André de Resende, of the identification between Portugal and Lusitania. Therefore, we examine the survival of what we would call a myth / idea - the expressive duplicity sustained on the one hand by the prominently mythological character of Hispanic (but also European) identity and, on the other, by the intense duality of the binomial unity / diversity of the peninsular historical panorama that goes through the course of Antiquity, through medieval times and culminating in the modern period and which is consistently revised in its perceptions and intellectual representations, configuring, in parallel, the weight of the ideological component in the construction of space. Myths and ideas that are closely linked by the hands of a cultural and political elite, which also tells much of what shapes us, identifies and leads us in the ways of time. Finally, we propose an essay that deals with a relationship of tension between tradition and innovation in a given social body, a matter that coincides with what is intended to be the formation of the “soul” of a nation, which is recognized in this concern as a way of identify and make themselves known.
