Abstract

The deployment of military contingents to Africa, since 1914, and Germany’s war declaration to Portugal in 1916, forced the Portuguese War Office to decree a general mobilization, redirecting all available resources towards the war effort. The political and military authorities did not spared the higher education institutions, sending their teachers, researchers and students to various technical services and to militia schools, causing important constraints in the normal activities of those institutions. Therefore, it is analyzed the impact of the general mobilization in the Republican universities and higher education institutions, the position of these institutions and their elites under the war context, identifying the solutions adopted as a result of the constraints caused by the general mobilization.
