COSTAS COM DOM: FAMÍLIA E ARQUIVO (SÉCULOS XV E XVI)

Abstract

Pretende-se com esta tese reconstituir o percurso da família Costa - dita dos “Costas com Dom”- que se inicia no final do século XV percorrendo depois todo o século XVI até aos primeiros anos do século XVII. Começaremos pela ascensão na Corte manuelina do seu patriarca fundador, D. Álvaro da Costa, e continuaremos até ao advento da dinastia filipina, abarcando as quatro primeiras gerações. Pretendemos também reconstituir, com recurso aos fundos arquivísticos disponíveis e já identificados, o que teriam sido os seus Arquivos de Família. Estes serão ainda estudados em si, na sua história, pela sua importância como um objecto de poder da família no decorrer do tempo, nos vários ramos desta; numa reflexão, portanto, sobre a forma como foram sendo constituídos e transmitidos. O objectivo da tese é, pois, de âmbito histórico e arquivístico, numa relação mútua de saberes. Pretende-se estudar e explicar a forma como a organização "família", em ordem a alcançar e reproduzir o seu poder, produz documentos escritos, os organiza em arquivo, os conserva e os lega aos descendentes - entendendo o Arquivo como um núcleo central da estruturação do poder nobre no Antigo Regime.

The aim of this thesis is to reconstruct the course of the Costa family, the “Costas com Dom”, beginning at the end of the 15th century and going throughout the 16th century until the first years of the 17th century. We will start with the ascending in the Manueline court of its founding patriarch, D. Álvaro da Costa, and continue until the advent of the Philippine dynasty, covering the first four generations. We also intend to reconstitute, using available archival funds already identified, what would have been their Family Archives. These will still be studied in its history, its importance as an object of family power during the course of time, in the various branches of the family; in a reflection, therefore, on how they were created and transmitted. The aim of the thesis is, therefore, of an historical and archival scope, in a mutual relation of knowledge. The intention is to study and explain how the organization "family", in order to reach and reproduce its power, produces written documents, organizes them in archives, preserves them and passes them on to the next generations - understanding the archive as a central and structuring nucleus of the power of the Old Regime’s nobility.
