Abstract: In the present essay I explore the concept of literary culture and its place in the formation of local political cultures. It is defended the theoretical and methodological interest, for intellectual history, of adopting a broad idea of the concept of literary culture. Applying such proposal to the Goan case during the colonial period, it is called attention to the multilingualism of this society and, in such framework, to the importance of paying attention to the social and political history as well as to the intellectual history of each literary language in the constitution of diverse local literary cultures. To researchers it becomes a challenge to study such diversity, the transits between such traditions and the political-cultural use of the palette of languages, considering the coexistence of multilingualism with plurilingualism in this society.
