| Abstract: | Two fragments in Portuguese archives (Ponte de Lima, Misericórdia, Fragmento nº 457A; Braga, Arquivo Distrital, Fundo paroquial de Vila Verde, livro B-55), from around the first half of the 16th century, feature complementary versions of Lamentation versicles, in Castilian language, with their respective tones. This paper will present the sources and attempt to reconstruct a context for such singing in the vernacular language, a difficult task compounded by the fact that the current vernacular in the areas where the fragments were found is actually not the Castilian language. |
