A assistência hospitalar na Lisboa medieval até à instituição do Hospital Real de Todos-os-Santos (sécs XIII-XV)

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo central estudar a história assistencial hospitalar da cidade de Lisboa na Época Medieval, através da realização de uma síntese sobre as instituições hospitalares, que entre o século XIII e o final do século XV se edificaram em Lisboa. Os estabelecimentos assistenciais hospitalares, anteriores à instituição do Hospital Real de Todos os Santos existentes na Lisboa Medieval, cumpriam um conjunto de funções sociais que procuramos estudar. A cidade de Lisboa viu-se continuamente dotada ao longo desse período, de uma série de instituições assistências de caridade, diversificado e em expansão, posto ao serviço de um conjunto de pessoas, que procuraremos categorizar. A abordagem medieval do socorro aos pobres tomou forma numa cultura que valorizava as estruturas coletivas de identidade, materializada em instituições destinadas a porvir às necessidades assistenciais daqueles percecionados enquanto pobres de Cristo.

This work aims to study the Hospitals that were founded in Lisbon in its Medieval Period, by performing a theoretical study of those institutions, built between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century. The Hospitals stocktaking in the present dissertation were perceived and conceived primarily as social care institutions or facilities, that chronologically speaking are located prior to the foundation of Hospital Real de Todos os Santos. They met a set of economic and social functions that we seek to study and comprehend, as Lisbon found itself during the Middle Ages continually provided by a number of hospital institutions, diverse in nature and rapidly growing in number, assisting people who we endeavour to categorize. The medieval approach seeking to help the poor took shape in a culture that valued the collective identity structures and embodied in institutions designed to care for the needs of those interpreted as “Paupers Christi”.
