Salvaguarda e Valorização do Património Ferroviário O caso do Barreiro

Abstract

Desde o século XIX, o desenvolvimento dos caminhos de ferro provocou transformações significativas no estilo de vida das sociedades, introduzindo novas dinâmicas e alterando o tecido de várias localidades. No entanto, a desindustrialização que caracterizou a segunda metade do século XX levou a um desinvestimento abrangente, resultando na desativação de muitas linhas ferroviárias e no encerramento de complexos ferroviários em todo o mundo. Este cenário desencadeou o abandono e a demolição de vastas infraestruturas. Apesar de eventualmente ter ganhado reconhecimento e estabilidade, este património ainda é frequentemente negligenciado, sobretudo em comparação com o património "clássico". A escolha do Barreiro como foco de investigação decorre das particulares questões e oportunidades que o património ferroviário aqui apresenta. O estudo visa compreender a evolução do complexo ferroviário do Barreiro, desde o seu início em 1855 até ao declínio nos anos 90, e avaliar o impacto do caminho de ferro nas transformações sociais, económicas, demográficas e urbanísticas daquela que era inicialmente uma vila piscatória e se transformou numa das áreas mais industrializadas do país. Além disso, considera-se crucial identificar os imóveis remanescentes e analisar o grau de proteção e valorização que têm recebido, bem como a sua relação com a comunidade local. Procura-se assim com esta dissertação identificar maneiras de integrar o património ferroviário no espaço urbano, promovendo o seu uso de forma a contribuir para o desenvolvimento social e económico, em equilíbrio com a comunidade e o ambiente.

Since the 19th century, the advent of railways has profoundly transformed society's way of life, introducing new dynamics and changing various localities. However, the deindustrialization that marked the latter half of the 20th century led to widespread disinvestment, resulting in the closure of railway lines and the shutdown of many railway complexes worldwide. This process led to the disuse and demolition of numerous infrastructures. Despite its later consolidation, railway assets have sometimes been neglected and relegated to the background, especially when compared to “traditional” heritage. The choice of Barreiro for this investigation highlights the issues and potential of railway heritage. The goal is to understand the evolution of the railway complex from its inception in 1855 to its decline starting in the 1990s and it seeks to assess the impact of the railway on the social, economic, demographic, and urban transformation of a fishing village that, in the 20th century, became one of the most industrialized areas in the country. Furthermore, it is crucial not only to identify the remaining buildings and to analyze the level of safeguarding and enhancement they have received and understand the relationship of these assets with the local community. The aim of this thesis is to identify ways of integrating railway heritage into urban space, promoting its use in a way that contributes to social and economic development, in balance with the community and the environment.
