O Centro Paleontológico Nery Delgado, um projeto de musealização e investigação.

Abstract

Ao longo dos anos, os museus têm-se adaptado às novas realidades, assumindo uma responsabilidade social ampliada, que abrange o desenvolvimento científico, pedagógico, di- dático e regional, especialmente por meio do turismo e da economia. O património paleonto- lógico português, embora rico e diverso, permanece desconhecido do público, exceto alguns grupos mais mediáticos. Este trabalho apresenta o Centro Paleontológico Nery Delgado, um novo organismo museológico que visa divulgar, educar, investigar e conservar o património paleontológico. O projeto surgiu da iniciativa particular do autor, que reuniu uma coleção pa- leontológica ao longo de 25 anos, hoje composta por mais de 1700 espécimes, distribuídos em quatro coleções, com destaque para o Paleozoico de Portugal, incluindo espécimes-tipo, ma- teriais publicados e materiais inéditos. A grande maioria da coleção são invertebrados (92% dos espécimes) e, destes, o grupo das trilobites é o dominante (80%). Deste modo, o projeto é dedicado a Nery Delgado, uma figura de destaque na geologia portuguesa, fundamental para o conhecimento geológico do país e que se dedicou especialmente à paleontologia e estratigra- fia do Paleozoico, com grande enfoque nos fósseis de trilobites. O centro complementa outras nove instituições museológicas em Portugal que abrigam coleções paleontológicas do Paleo- zoico nacional, estabelecendo um contraste com estas. Localizado na região centro de Portugal, na localidade de Vales de Cima, entre Tomar e Torres Novas, em plena Comunidade Intermu- nicipal Médio Tejo, servida por vias rápidas como a A1, A13, A23 e IC9, o edifício museológico está integrado num terreno rural de 12.400 m² e consiste em dois pisos e um espaço exterior, projetados para abrigar fósseis paleozoicos portugueses e apoiar atividades de investigação e educação. O piso superior terá uma exposição permanente, destacando fósseis da região, en- quanto o piso inferior inclui um espaço multifuncional, com quarto equipado com kitchenette e laboratório para receber investigadores, que terão à sua disposição uma coleção de fósseis paleozoicos inédita. Concebido para o apoio à comunidade educativa em ambiente não formal, o centro oferece saídas de campo e atividades didáticas in situ, pensadas para as escolas, se- guindo as Aprendizagens Essenciais definidas pela Direção Geral de Educação. Uma estrutura inovadora para o ensino de paleontologia a deficientes visuais inclui réplicas 3D de fósseis num percurso exterior do Fanerozoico montado à escala. O discurso expositivo comtempla três espaços: dois interiores, com recursos e objetivos distintos, tendo por base a coleção de fósseis, e um exterior, que funcionará como suplemento à compreensão do tempo geológico, tendo por base representações de grupos biológicos da paleontologia e da geo-história portu- guesas. Embora nasça de iniciativa privada, o centro conta com o apoio de instituições que garantem o suporte científico e asseguram a sua entrada nos circuitos educativos e de oferta cultural da região. Este é um projeto multi e transdisciplinar, integrando bio- e geodiversidade, fomenta o desenvolvimento local e regional, a restauração e o alojamento e promove o bem- estar físico e mental e a qualidade de vida da população. Usa o passado para construir o futuro!

Over the years, museums have adapted to new realities, taking on an expanded social respon- sibility that encompasses scientific, pedagogical, didactic and regional development, espe- cially through tourism and the economy. Portugal's palaeontological heritage, although rich and diverse, remains unknown to the public, except for a few famous groups. This work pre- sents the Nery Delgado Palaeontological Centre, a new museum that aims to disseminate, ed- ucate, research and conserve palaeontological heritage. The project arose from the private ini- tiative of the author, who put together a palaeontological collection over the course of 25 years, today comprising more than 1,700 specimens, distributed in four collections, with an emphasis on the Palaeozoic of Portugal, including type-specimens, published and new materials. Most of the collection is made up of invertebrates (92 %) and of these, the trilobite group is the dominant one (80%). In this way, the project is dedicated to Nery Delgado, a leading figure in Portuguese geology, fundamental to the country's geological knowledge and who dedicated himself especially to the palaeontology and stratigraphy of the Palaeozoic, with a strong focus on trilobite fossils. The centre complements nine other museum institutions in Portugal that house palaeontological collections from the national Palaeozoic, establishing a contrast with these. Located in the centre of Portugal, in the town of Vales de Cima, between Tomar and Torres Novas, in the heart of the Médio Tejo Intermunicipal Community, served by motor- ways such as the A1, A13, A23 and IC9, the museum building is part of a 12,400 m² rural site and consists of two floors and an outdoor space, designed to house Portuguese Palaeozoic fossils and support research and education activities. The upper floor will have a permanent exhibition, highlighting fossils from the region, while the lower floor includes a multifunc- tional space, with a room equipped with a kitchenette and a laboratory to receive researchers, who will have at their disposal an unprecedented collection of Palaeozoic fossils. Designed to support the educational community in a non-formal environment, the centre offers field trips and in situ teaching activities designed for schools, following the Essential Learning Standards defined by the Directorate General for Education. An innovative structure for teaching palae- ontology to the visually impaired includes 3D replicas of fossils in an outdoor tour of the Phanerozoic mounted to scale. The exhibition discourse comprises three spaces: two indoors, with different resources and objectives, based on the fossil collection, and one outside, which will act as a supplement to understanding geological time, based on representations of biological groups from Portuguese palaeontology and geohistory. Although it is a private in- itiative, the centre has the support of institutions that will provide scientific support and en- sure that it is included in the region's educational and cultural circuits. This is a multi- and transdisciplinary project, integrating bio- and geodiversity, fostering local and regional development, promoting the physical and mental well-being and quality of life of the population.
