O Frevo: Percursos, Práticas e Patrimonialização

Abstract

Esta tese tem como objeto de estudo o frevo, um género de música popular brasileira, nas suas múltiplas expressões e contextos performativos em Pernambuco, tendo em conta a recente patrimonialização do género inscrito na Lista Representativa do Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade da UNESCO, em 2012. A tese aborda as origens do frevo, as suas características musicais, a sua mediatização, o seu enquadramento social, o seu papel no carnaval de Pernambuco, sobretudo em Olinda e no Recife, os processos de hibridização no âmbito do frevo instrumental e o impacte da criação do Paço do Frevo no seguimento da inscrição do frevo na Lista Representativa do Património Cultural Imaterial da Humanidade da UNESCO no ensino, na performação e na difusão do género. A tese baseia-se no levantamento da documentação histórica em torno do frevo e no trabalho de campo etnográfico que realizei em Olinda e no Recife entre 2016 e 2019, com o apoio científico do Departamento de Música da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). A análise do frevo que apresento ancora-se nas perspetivas teóricas sobre a categorização da música, a relação entre géneros expressivos e festas populares, os processos de hibridização musical e de patrimonialização.

This thesis focuses on the study of frevo, a genre of popular Brazilian music, in its multiple dimensions and different performance contexts in Pernambuco, taking into account the recent heritagization of the genre inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, in 2012. The thesis examines the origins of frevo, its musical characteristics, its mediatization, the social context in which it thrives, and the role of this expressive genre in the carnival of Pernambuco, especially in Olinda and Recife; the processes of hybridization in instrumental frevo; the impact of the creation of the “Paço do Frevo” following inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage on the teaching, performance and dissemination of the genre. The thesis draws on historical documentation as well as ethnographic fieldwork in Olinda and Recife (2016-2019), with the support of the Music Department at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE). The analysis of frevo that I present is anchored on theoretical perspectives on the categorization of music, the relationship between expressive genres and popular festivals, and the impact of musical hybridization and heritagization processes.
