Materiality disclosures in sustainability reporting - an analysis of the shipping industry in Norway

Abstract

This Work Project examines the current practices of materiality disclosures in the Norwegian shipping industry and the preparedness for upcoming regulations. The analysis of this paper builds upon univariate statistics based on the sustainability reports for 12 Norwegian-registered publicly listed shipping companies for 2022. The findings highlight a lack of harmonization, making comparison for users difficult. Variations in reporting practices and the quality of disclosures are clear, as well as some opportunities for improvement. Best-in-class practices should be considered by preparers for future reporting. Users should also be cautious of information that is not disclosed, indicating a potential for risk.
