Entre ilhas: Etnografias da circulação nos Açores

Abstract

A tese “Entre Ilhas: etnografias da circulação nos Açores” analisa as circulações marítimas que se produziram ao redor dos Açores, desde o seu povoamento até à década de oitenta do século XX, altura em que o avião substitui definitivamente o barco na maioria das rotas. Trata-se, pois, de uma etnografia do passado que se foca principalmente no século XX, e que parte do mar como meio de comunicação para analisar como é que os açorianos se relacionavam com as ilhas vizinhas, com o reino/nação a que pertenciam e com o resto do mundo, e de que maneira essas relações, e essa forma de circular, marcaram o modus vivendi e os discursos identitários do arquipélago. A sequência em que as rotas são analisadas – das mais próximas às mais longínquas - não é aleatória: contrariando a prioridade que na era da globalização é usualmente dada a análise de modos maiores da circulação, este projeto coloca no centro da sua análise as navegações mais próximas, entre ilhas primeiro e com Lisboa depois, para pensar a partir delas as navegações e relações transatlânticas. Desta forma, procura-se descolonizar a reflexão sobre os espaços insulares, desconstruindo o olhar que subordina as ilhas aos continentes e que pensa o mar como um espaço socialmente vazio, trazendo assim para a discussão conceitos como os de “aquapélago” ou de “arquipelagic thinking”. Para o fazer, apresentamos uma etnografia em trânsito que segue espacial e temporalmente as intensas trocas que se produziam entre ilhas e com o continente e as dinâmicas que se estabeleciam por via marítima. Assim, trata-se de uma pesquisa etnográfica que se desdobra no tempo e no espaço: o trabalho de campo (com recolha de memórias, arquivos fotográficos, diários pessoais e documentos oficiais) inclui múltiplos tempos e estende a sua incidência de terreno a nove ilhas e aos barcos que as ligam. Em diálogo com a literatura, pretende-se com este projeto enriquecer a reflexão sobre fronteiras e atravessamentos na antropologia contemporânea e problematizar o peso que temas como isolamento/cosmopolitismo e centro /periferia têm na tematização da identidade dos Açores e nas identidades insulares em geral. O projeto “Entre ilhas”, de que esta tese é um dos resultados, apresenta-se numa dupla vertente: como etnografia escrita e como documentário etnográfico. Apesar de partilharem o nome, as duas produções diferenciam-se não só na linguagem, mas também no tom e na abordagem, funcionado como objetos independentes, mas complementares. O desdobramento autoral (eu realizadora/eu antropóloga) junta-se assim ao desdobramento espacial e temporal, construindo um universo de múltiplas leituras.

The thesis "Between Islands: ethnographies of circulation in the Azores" analyses the maritime circulations that took place around Azores, from its settlement until the eighties if the 20th century, when the airplane definitely replaced the boat on most routes, It is, therefore, an ethnography of the past that focuses mainly on the 20th century, and that approaches the sea as a means of communication to analyze how the Azoreans related to the neighboring islands, to the kingdon/nation to which they belonged, and to the rest of the world, and how these relationships, and this way of circulating, marked the archopelago's modus vivendi and its identify discourses. The sequence in which the routes are analyzed - from the closest to the farthest - is not random: contrary to the priority that in the era of globalization is usually given the analysis of major modes of circulation, this project places at the center of its analysis the nearest navigations: between islands first and with Lisbon later, and from there, we will think about transatlantic navigations. In this way, we seek to decolonize the approach to island spaces, deconstructiong the perspective that subordinates discussion concepts such as "aquapélago" or "archipelagic thinking". To do so, we present an ethnography in transit that follows spatially and temporally the intense exchanges that took place between islands and with the mainland and the dynamics that were established by sea. Thus, it is ethnographic research that unfolds in time and space: the field work (with the collection of memories, photographic archives, personal diaries and official documents) includes multiple times and extends its terrain incidence to nine islands and the boats that connect them. In dialogue with the literature, this project intends to enrich the reflection on the frontiers and crossings in contemporary anthropology and to problematize the weight that themes such as isolation/cosmopolitanism and center/periphery have in the thematization of the identity of the Azores and insular identities in general. The project "Between islands", of which this written thesis is one of the results, is presented in two ways: as a written ethnography and as an ethnographic documentary. Despite sharing the same name, the two productions differ not only in language, but also in its tone and approach, functioning as independent but complementary obbjects. The authorial unfolding (I filmmaker/I anthropologist) thus join the spatial and temporal unfolding, building a universe of multiple readings.
