Extremismos em crescimento na Europa e em Portugal

Abstract

Security is the big theme of the XXI century. More and more it’s become a central concern for both States and individuals. Nonetheless, it is impossible to achieve a state of full security; but the bar for what is considerate as acceptable keeps getting higher and higher. In the beginning of the century we saw the resurface of the terrorism phenomenon, with several attacks carried in Western soil, followed by a swift response in the territories where, allegedly, this terrorists were hiding. In practice, these actions had as affect the rise of geopolitical instability and intolerance: but not the decrease and eradication of these terrorist groups. As if this wasn’t enough, the West faces now, more than 50 years after the II World War, the resurface of the far-right ideology, and the coming to power of an enemy deemed defeated long ago. In both cases, the spread of propaganda throughout the internet makes it harder to control radicalization, as well as prevent potential attacks. A potential solution, featured in the present thesis, is integration. An individual or a group of individuals that is well integrated in society will have fewer reasons to carry out actions that may destroy of endanger it.

A segurança é o grande tema do século XXI. Cada vez mais é uma preocupação central quer de Estados quer de indivíduos. Apesar disto, é impossível atingirmos a segurança plena; mas a fasquia do que é considerado aceitável não para de subir. O início do século trouxe-nos o ressurgir do fenómeno do terrorismo, com diversos ataques a serem levados a cabo em solo ocidental, seguidos por uma célere resposta nos territórios onde alegadamente se escondiam estes terroristas. Na prática, estas ações tiveram como efeito prático o aumento da instabilidade geopolítica e o aumento da tolerância: mas não a diminuição e erradicação destes grupos terroristas. Como se este fenómeno não fosse suficiente, o Ocidente vê agora, mais de 50 anos depois do fim da II Guerra Mundial, o ressurgir da ideologia de extrema-direita e a chegada ao poder de um inimigo que consideraram há muito derrotado. Em ambos os casos, a disseminação de propaganda através da internet torna cada vez mais difícil o controlo da radicalização, bem como a prevenção de potenciais ataques. Uma potencial solução, abordada na presente dissertação, é a aposta na integração. Um indivíduo ou um grupo de indivíduos que se encontre bem integrado na sociedade terá menos razões para levar contra a mesma ações que a possam destruir ou fragilizar.
