O auxílio à emigração irregular para França e a figura do intermediário no interior rural português (1957-1974)

Abstract

Esta dissertação faz uma história social do auxílio não autorizado à emigração irregular em Portugal, no contexto rural da beira interior (entre os distritos de Viseu e da Guarda) durante a ditadura, na fase de maior emigração para França (1957-1974). O objetivo é ler a figura do auxiliador da emigração na sua densidade histórica. O resgate desta figura do desconhecimento histórico – provocado por discursos negativos acerca da atividade ilegalizada, pela escassez de registos escritos produzidos pelos próprios e pelo secretismo que as práticas clandestinas implicam – permite discutir as dinâmicas e relações sociais rurais em que se inseriu, conhecer as relações entre o “poder central” e os “poderes periféricos” do estado e os diferentes interesses implicados na emigração, assim como debater o exercício da repressão policial durante o último vinténio da ditadura.

This dissertation aims to do a social history of the portuguese human smuggling, in the countryside between the districts of Viseu and Guarda, during the dictatorship, when there was an irregular and massive migration towards France (1957-1974). This work aims to know the figure of the smuggler in its historical density. Recovering this figure from historical silence - provoked by negative discourses about this illegalized activity, the scarcity of written sources produced by the smugglers themselves, and the secrecy of the clandestine practices - allows us to: discuss the dynamics and rural social relations in which it was embedded; to debate the relationships between the “central power” and the “peripheral powers” of the State and the various interests involved in emigration. It also allows us to discuss the exercise of police repression during the last twenty years of the dictatorship.
