Catarina de Orta (c. 1512-1569). Relações Familiares e Sociais de «Ortas», Cristãos-Novos (Séculos XV a XVII)

Abstract

As informações constantes dos dois processos inquisitoriais a que Catarina de Orta foi sujeita (Lisboa, 1547; Goa, 1568-69) constituem um apreciável ponto de partida para o objetivo do presente trabalho: rever e aumentar o conhecimento adquirido, sobretudo no século XX, em torno da vertente biográfica e da interação social da família nuclear e de alguns descendentes do mercador cristão-novo Fernão de Orta, pai de Catarina de Orta (c. 1512-1569), irmã mais nova do autor dos «Coloquios dos simples, he drogas e cousas mediçinais da India» (Goa, 1563), Garcia de Orta. O arco temporal visado cinge-se aos séculos XV a XVII.

The information provided in the two Inquisition files against Catarina de Orta (Lisbon, 1547; Goa, 1568-69) constitute an important starting point for the main purpose of this work: to review and increase the knowledge acquired, especially in the 20th century, around the biographical aspects and the social interaction of the immediate family and some descendants of the New Christian merchant Fernão de Orta, father of Catarina de Orta (c. 1512-1569), the youngest sister of Garcia de Orta, the author of the «Coloquios dos simples, he drogas e cousas mediçinais da India» (published in Goa, 1563). Period of time under consideration: 15th-17th centuries.
