O olhar alemão: a música em Portugal em finais do Antigo Regime segundo fontes alemãs

Abstract

Na viragem do século XVIII para o século XIX multiplicaram-se as viagens a Portugal desde o centro e norte da Europa, em parte pelo súbito interesse provocado pelo Terramoto, em parte pelo crescimento do fenómeno europeu das expedições científicas e viagens de lazer, em parte pela vinda a Portugal de oficiais do exército nas Guerras Peninsulares. Dessa movimentação resultaram naturalmente muitas descrições, quer sejam sob a forma de relatos de viagem, quer sejam diários, cartas, artigos de jornais e publicações periódicas, contendo informações sobre a realidade portuguesa vista através dos olhos da Europa. Graças ao trabalho de Rui Vieira Nery, que recolheu mais de três centenas de depoimentos relativos à música nos relatos dos viajantes estrangeiros a Portugal e ao Brasil entre 1750 e 1834, e que generosamente nos colocou à disposição, existe um corpus numeroso de relatos de viagem, sobre os quais assenta a presente investigação. Especificamente, são tratados aqui os relatos de viagem alemães, que têm permanecido até hoje pouco estudados, contrariamente ao que acontece com relatos em língua inglesa, francesa, espanhola ou italiana. Nesta dissertação pretende fazer-se um estudo crítico e comparativo destas fontes, para o período entre 1762 e 1807, e averiguar em que medida existia (ou não) um olhar alemão sobre a prática musical portuguesa. Enquadrar criticamente e contextualizar os relatos de viajantes alemães, retirar deles informação útil para o conhecimento da prática musical portuguesa e entender de que maneira estes textos influenciaram a percepção de Portugal no espaço germânico, é o propósito desta investigação.

At the turn of the 18th century to the 19th century, travels to Portugal from central and northern Europe increased significantly, partly due to the sudden interest caused by the Lisbon Earthquake, partly because of the growth of the European phenomenon of scientific expeditions and leisure travel, partly by the arrival to Portugal of army officers during the Peninsular Wars. These movements originated many contemporary descriptions, whether in the form of travel reports, diaries, letters, newspaper articles and periodicals, containing information on the Portuguese reality seen through the eyes of Europe. Thanks mainly to the work of Professor Rui Vieira Nery, who collected the music-related excerpts in the reports of foreign travelers to Portugal and Brazil between 1750 and 1834, there is a numerous body of travel reports, on which this research is based. Specifically, the focus lies on German travel reports, which have remained poorly studied until now, contrary to reports in English, French, Spanish or Italian. This dissertation intends to carry out a critical and comparative study of these sources, for the period between 1762 and 1807, and to investigate to what extent was there (or not) a German outlook at Portuguese musical practice. To critically frame and contextualize the reports of German travelers, extracting from them useful information for the knowledge of Portuguese musical practice of that time, as well as understanding how these texts influenced the perception of Portugal in the German world, is the purpose of this investigation.
