The Royal Censorship Office was created by a Decree of April 5th 1768. In the context of the political programme of the prime minister Pombal, a decisive step towards controlling books published in Portugal, those already existing in libraries or imported from abroad. Censorship had been so far assigned to religious and civil authorities, including the Inquisition. This change represents the assumption of a full governmental responsibility in matters concerning book’s censorship. Libraries of religious institutions had a peculiar statute: they did had licenses to own forbidden books but on the other hand they had to comply with the rules dictated by the Royal Censorship Office. In this study we propose to present some strategies followed by religious libraries in which we see acceptance of the new legislation pertaining to forbidden and suppressed books whereas we detect at the same time, the maintenance of some “heretic and impudent” authors.
