As Casas Bancárias de Lisboa na Crise de 1876: Uma perspectiva comparada

Abstract

O presente trabalho trata de um esforço de compreender as casas bancárias de Lisboa e como elas lidaram com a crise de 1876 em Portugal. O tema das casas bancárias é um tema ainda pouco desenvolvido pela historiografia portuguesa e todos os principais trabalhos sobre o sistema bancário português citam a falta de estudos sobre este tipo de instituição, ocasionado pela falta de fontes que indiquem informações substanciais sobre essas casas bancárias. A partir disso, esse estudo tratou de recolher as principais fontes sobre as casas bancárias, aliando-as com os estudos desenvolvidos, fizemos um balanço dessas instituições, como elas surgiram e como vão ultrapassar a crise de 1876. Tratamos também de realizar estudos de casos sobre as casas bancárias Henry Burnay & Cª e Fonsecas, Santos & Viana, já que sobre essas tínhamos informações mais detalhadas que puderam descrever melhor as atividades das casas bancárias. Além disso, enxergamos a possibilidade de comparar as casas bancárias de Lisboa, com as casas bancárias do Rio de Janeiro, que também passa por uma crise na segunda metade do século XIX, a crise do Souto em 1864. Fizemos uma análise sobre a legislação bancária dos dois países e a como as casas bancárias reagiram em um caso e no outro.

This paper is about an effort to understand Lisbon's banking houses and how they dealt with the crisis of 1876 in Portugal. The theme of banking houses is still little developed by Portuguese historiography and all the main works on the Portuguese banking system cite the lack of studies on this type of institution, caused by the lack of sources that indicate substantial information about these banks. From that point on, this study tried to collect the main sources on banking houses, allying them with the studies developed, we took stock of these institutions, how they emerged and how they will overcome the crisis of 1876. We also carried out case studies on Henry Burnay & Cª and Fonsecas, Santos & Viana banks, since we had more detailed information on these banks that could better describe their activities. In addition, we saw the possibility of comparing the banks in Lisbon with those in Rio de Janeiro, which also went through a crisis in the second half of the 19th century, the Souto crisis in 1864. We did an analysis of the banking legislation of both countries and how banks reacted in one case and the other
