Economic Integration and Labour Flows. The European Single Act and its Consequences

Abstract

The study of the joint decision to work and/or to emigrate enhances our knowledge of the allocation of time within the person's life-cycle. This study is particularly relevant when the barriers against migration of workers are going to change as will happen in the countries joining the EEC. Using data from Portugal an empirical model is estimated which shows that wages in the destination countries strongly influence emigration levels and the supply of labour.
