Esta tese aborda o conceito de recordação a partir de fotografias associadas ao
fenómeno migratório português para o Brasil até meados da década de 1970. Nela,
tentámos pensar nos potenciais e especificidades da recordação fotográfica a partir de
um corpus de fotografias usadas como missivas. Essas fotografias surgiram no âmbito
de uma pesquisa de três anos em arquivos e fundos pessoais e familiares, e foram
inicialmente formas para lidar, num círculo íntimo, com a distância transatlântica,
numa época e contexto em que a comunicação se dava sobretudo por via postal. Para
tal, recorreu-se a uma metodologia histórica e antropológica, nomeadamente, a um
método de observação-participante no seio de um dispositivo de relato de percursos
migratórios e de memórias a partir de fotografias. Os relatos foram feitos tanto pelos
sujeitos que emigraram a partir das fotografias que se encontravam em suas casas,
como pelos seus familiares e descendentes. As correspondências fotográficas, a
memorabilia e as fotografias de identificação aqui perfiladas, foram entendidas a
partir do seu desempenho em processos individuais identitários, de subjectivação e de
escavação mnemónica. Além disso, a análise destes souvenirs fotográficos mobilizou
o conceito de arquivo e os próprios conceitos de memória e de recordação na medida
em que podem ser encarados como gestos particulares e como uma experiência
afectivo-temporal específica a este tipo de circulação da imagem técnica.
This thesis addresses the concept of ‘recordação’ based on photographs related to the phenomenon of Portuguese migration to Brazil, from the late 19th century until the middle of the 1970s. These photos appeared within the context of a three-year research in personal and family archives, and were initially ways to deal with the transatlantic distance, in an intimate circle, during a period when postal services represented the major means of communication. In order to do it, I employed historical and anthropological methodologies, namely a participant observation method, within a narrative device of migration stories and memories based on photographs. Those stories were not only told by those persons who migrated based on photographs displayed at their homes, but also by their relatives and descendants. The photographic correspondances, the memorabilia, and the photo identification displayed in this thesis, are understood in relation to their role in identitary individual processes of subjectivation and mnemonic excavation. The analysis of these photo souvenirs has also mobilized the concepts of archive, of memory and ‘recordação’ as a particular gesture and a temporal-affective experience specific to this kind of circulation of the technical image.
