A condição de saúde oral dos idosos na população alentejana

Abstract

RESUMO - O envelhecimento demográfico da população tem vindo a aumentar significativamente, o que torna imprescindível realizar estudos epidemiológicos que permitam quantificar o estado geral de saúde e o bem-estar da população idosa, em particular as condições de saúde oral. O presente trabalho insere-se nesta temática e pretende contribuir para aprofundar o conhecimento sobre os indicadores de saúde oral que afetam a população idosa em Portugal e identificar as suas necessidades neste âmbito. Para o efeito, foi desenvolvido um estudo epidemiológico e transversal, assente numa abordagem observacional e analítica, na região do Alentejo, onde se observa a taxa de envelhecimento mais elevada do país. A amostra é constituída por 876 idosos com idades compreendidas entre os 65 e os 96 anos (M = 76,43; DP = 6,50), sendo 56,6% do sexo feminino. Os dados foram recolhidos através do indicador sócio dentário e de qualidade de vida – Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) – e alguns dos indicadores do estado de saúde (e.g., fatores clínicos, ambientais e de incapacidade) cuja associação com a autoperceção da saúde oral é bastante relevante para compreender a funcionalidade e o bem-estar desta população. À semelhança de estudos anteriores, o instrumento revelou ter boas qualidades psicométricas, o que sugere ser adequado para avaliar a qualidade de vida da saúde oral dos idosos. A pertinência do estudo prende-se, ainda, com a criação de conhecimento científico numa área de elevado interesse para a Saúde Pública face às exigências atuais provocadas pelo aumento da esperança de vida da população portuguesa e mundial.

ABSTRACT - The demographic aging of the population has been increasing significantly, which makes it essential to carry out studies to quantify the general health and well-being of the elderly population, in particular oral health conditions. The present work is part of this theme and aims to contribute to deepen the knowledge about the oral health indicators that affect the elderly population in Portugal and to identify their needs in this area. For this purpose, an epidemiological and transversal study was developed based on an observational and analytical approach in the Alentejo region, where the highest rate of aging in the country is observed. The sample consisted of 876 elderly individuals aged 65-96 years (M = 76.43; (SD) = 6.50), the majority of whom were female (56.6%). The data was collected through the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) - and some health status indicators (eg, clinical, environmental and disability factors), whose association with health self-perception is very relevant to understand the functionality and well-being of this population. As in previous studies carried out with the population, the instrument has shown to have good psychometric qualities, which suggests that it is adequate to evaluate the quality of life of the oral health of the elderly. The pertinence of the study is also related to the creation of scientific knowledge in an area of high interest for Public Health in light of the current demands caused by the increase in the life expectancy of the Portuguese and world population.
