Esta dissertação tem como objectivo central a descrição e análise do modo como é representada a religiosidade portuguesa na obra Narrative of a Spring Tour in Portugal (1870) do viajante inglês Alfred Charles Smith (1822-1898), um clérigo anglicano e afamado ornitólogo que visitou este país ibérico entre Abril e Maio de 1868. A visão do forasteiro foca-se nos aspectos que mais o impressionaram, nomeadamente a arquitectura das igrejas e mosteiros que teve oportunidade de ver, as expressões de espiritualidade associadas a esses lugares sagrados e as manifestações de piedade popular, como as procissões, que sempre atraíram os estrangeiros, sobretudo os britânicos, que há muito demandavam Portugal, quer em busca de um clima ameno e de belas paisagens, quer do pitoresco e do exótico dos usos e costumes.
Após uma breve referência biobibliográfica relativa ao autor (Introdução) e um enquadramento teórico da Escrita de Viagem, em articulação com a Imagologia literária e cultural, disciplina que encontra nas narrativas de viagem um terreno particularmente fértil para a aplicação dos seus instrumentos de análise e conceitos operativos como os de imagem, auto-imagem, hetero-imagem e estereótipo (Capítulo 1), insere-se Alfred Charles Smith na tradição britânica dos relatos de viagem sobre Portugal, procurando apontar o que no seu testemunho existe de singular (Capítulo 2), para finalmente fazer uma descrição e análise dos aspectos da religiosidade portuguesa que mais prenderam a atenção deste Reverendo anglicano em terras de católicos, estabelecendo-se em simultâneo um cotejo/diálogo com outros viajantes (alguns dos quais lidos por Smith) britânicos que se pronunciaram sobre a mesma temática (Capítulo 3).
Narrative of a Spring Tour in Portugal apresenta-nos a visão de alguém que demonstra genuína curiosidade e abertura em relação ao Outro (português) e se pauta pela elegância nas suas apreciações, sem deixar de anotar o que lhe desagrada, mas nunca caindo na crítica fácil ou ácida, por vezes, injusta, que, em muitos outros viajantes, ostenta a marca de uma (imperial) postura de superioridade face a um país periférico, Portugal, um pequeno reino saudoso das glórias do passado.
Entendeu-se tratar os diferentes tópicos abordados por Alfred Charles Smith acompanhando o itinerário percorrido pelo autor. As abundantes citações do seu texto destinam-se a ilustrar o tipo de considerações que o viajante inglês teceu, dando a ouvir a sua própria voz e modo de dizer. Ainda que de forma breve, fornece-se alguma contextualização histórico-religiosa que se julgou pertinente e de utilidade.
This dissertation aims at describing and analysing how Portuguese religiosity is represented in Narrative of a Spring Tour in Portugal (1870) by the traveller Alfred Charles Smith (1822-1898), an Anglican clergyman and famous ornithologist who visited this Iberian country between April and May 1868. The outsider's vision focuses on the aspects that impressed him most, namely the architecture of churches and monasteries he was able to visit, the expressions of spirituality associated with those sacred places and the manifestations of popular piety such as the processions that always attracted foreigners, especially the British, who long sought out Portugal, whether in search of a mild climate and beautiful landscapes or of picturesque and exotic customs and manners. After some biobibliographical data about the author (Introduction) and a theoretical framework of Travel Writing, in articulation with literary and cultural Imagology, a discipline that finds in travel narratives a particularly fertile ground for the application of its instruments of analysis and concepts such as image, self-image, hetero-image and stereotype (Chapter 1), I consider Alfred Charles Smith in the light of the British tradition of travel accounts about Portugal, seeking to point out what is singular in his testimony (Chapter 2), lastly to describe and analyse the aspects of Portuguese religiosity that most caught the attention of this Anglican cleric in a land of Catholics, at the same time establishing a comparison/dialogue with other British travellers (some of whom read by Smith) who wrote about the same theme (Chapter 3). Narrative of the Spring Tour in Portugal presents us with the vision of someone who evinces genuine curiosity and openness towards the Other (the Portuguese) and is guided by elegance in his appreciations, not avoiding notes of what he dislikes but never falling into sometimes unfair easy or acid criticism, which, in many other travellers’ accounts, bears the mark of an (imperial) posture of superiority vis-a-vis a peripheral country, Portugal, a small kingdom yearning after the glories of the past. The different topics addressed by Alfred Charles Smith are treated here in accordance with the itinerary followed by the author. The abundant quotations from his travel account are intended to illustrate the kind of consideration which the English traveller made, allowing his own voice to be heard. Although briefly, some historical-religious contextualization is provided which I consider pertinent and useful.
