A Estrada para Alcácer-Quibir - Razões para uma decisão controversa

Abstract

D. Sebastião é, provavelmente, o Rei português mais estudado e descrito, quer no que respeita à variedade de autores, quer no que respeita à quantidade de textos (em prosa e em verso), quer mesmo no que respeita à diversidade de outras formas de arte – Toda a historiografia dedicada a D. Sebastião é centrada na questão da sua incúria relativamente à sucessão e ao resultado de Alcácer-Quibir. Talvez não seja para menos: afinal de contas, o que conta em História é o que aconteceu e o que aconteceu teve consequências graves para Portugal. Mas relatar o que aconteceu é insuficiente para explicar a História – e quando não é explicada, a História transforma-se em história, uma mera e enfadonha base de dados de eventos, actores, datas e lugares. Não é verdade que D. Sebastião tivesse descurado a questão da descendência – apenas as possibilidades de casamento que foram levantadas foram mal sucedidas por razões várias e não totalmente imputáveis ao rei. Tal como houve razões de Estado, razões estratégicas bem meditadas, que aconselhavam o envolvimento no Norte de África face ao que estava em jogo… e na situação que se vivia então, o risco era baixo. A análise do percurso governativo de D. Sebastião inserida no contexto doméstico e internacional em que ele viveu permite ajuizar sobre as suas motivações e julgar da justeza da sua decisão de intervir no Norte de África e de aceitar a batalha em que se perdeu.

Most likely, King Sebastião is the more studied and described King in the Portuguese history, whether in terms of the variety of authors, or in the quantity of texts (both in straight prose or in verses), or even in the variety of other forms of art. Nonetheless, most of the historiography dedicated to him only focus the issue of his alleged negligence about his succession and the outcome of Alcácer-Quibir. There are, perhaps, some good reasons for it: after all, what happened is what counts in History, and in this particular case, that brought serious consequences to Portugal. But to report only what happened is too short to explain History – and if not explained, History becomes just a story, a mere and tedious database of events, key players, dates and places. It is not true that King Sebastião had neglected the issue of his succession – for various reasons all the possibilities of marriage that were taken into account have failed, and he was not totaly blameful for that. And there were raisons d’état, deeply meditated motives, that recommended a military engagement in the North of Africa in view of what was the situation then… and in that situation the risk was assessed as low. The analysis of the ruling performance of King Sebastião within the domestic and international context he lived in, allows us to speculate about his motivations, as well as to judge about the adequacy of his decisions to engage in the North of Africa and to accept the battle in which he got lost.
