O sítio do forte de São Paulo

Abstract

This work aims to analyse the archaeological remains of the Fort of São Paulo, built in the homonymous old parish (Lisbon), from the second half of the 17th century onwards. Based on the study of the archaeological structures found in Mercado da Ribeira and Praça D. Luís I excavations, we will to assess its architectural and artefacts characteristics, in connection to the stratigraphical dynamics, as well as the geostrategic implementation of its construction. Simultaneously, the data recorded allows us to better understand the diachrony of the occupation of this area. This way we intend to contribute to the knowledge of Lisbon’s riverside during the maritime Portuguese expansion.
