Memórias da mazuca da família Tiago dos Santos

Abstract

A presente investigação incide sobre a mazuca, uma prática expressiva interpretada em comunidades rurais do Agreste de Pernambuco, Brasil. Baseada na leitura de fontes escritas e em trabalho de terreno em várias regiões do estado de Pernambuco, sobretudo entre uma família de praticantes da mazuca residente na zona de Camocim de São Félix, este estudo procura demonstrar como a mazuca constitui o principal instrumento para evocar e construir uma memória familiar. Esta memória edifica-se por relação à figura do pai, um escravo liberto nos finais do século XIX, e aos valores sociais que transmitiu familiarmente. Apesar da mazuca ter sido historicamente entendida como uma apropriação local da mazurka de origem polaca, a etnografia realizada com a família Tiago dos Santos, assim como o diálogo com estudiosos angolanos em Lisboa, revelaram que ela é muito provavelmente uma prática expressiva transportada a partir de Angola, e transformada por escravos ao longo do complexo que Paul Gilroy denominou de “Atlântico Negro” (Gilroy 2001).

The present research focuses on mazuca, an expressive practice interpreted in rural communities of the Agreste of Pernambuco, Brazil. Based on the reading of written sources and fieldwork in several regions of the state of Pernambuco, especially among a family of mazuca practitioners residing in the Camocim area of São Félix, this study seeks to demonstrate how mazuca is the main instrument to evoke and build a family memory. This memory is built around the figure of the father, a freed slave at the end of the nineteenth century, and the social values he transmitted familiarly. Although the mazuca was historically understood as a local appropriation of the mazurka of Polish origin, the ethnography carried out with the Tiago dos Santos family, as well as the dialogue with Angolan scholars in Lisbon, revealed that it is most probably an expressive practice transported from Angola, and transformed by slaves along the complex that Paul Gilroy called "Black Atlantic" (Gilroy 2001).
