Contextos socioculturais, discursos e percepções sobre a mutilação genital feminina

Abstract

A Mutilação Genital Feminina, ou Corte dos Genitais Femininos (MGF/CGF), constitui-se como mais uma das formas de violência baseada no género e um atentado aos direitos e liberdades das crianças, meninas e mulheres em vários países do mundo, incluindo Portugal. São graves as consequências para a saúde física e psicológica das mulheres e meninas a ela submetidas. A MGF/CGF é hoje considerada um problema de direitos humanos e de saúde pública incontornável para a maioria dos países europeus que acolhem populações migrantes oriundas dos países praticantes. Neste artigo, exploraremos a magnitude e extensão do fenómeno, ao mesmo tempo que analisaremos os contextos socioculturais da prática, sobretudo a partir de entrevistas realizadas a mulheres a residir em Portugal e que foram submetidas a esta prática nefasta. Female Genital Mutilation or Genital Cutting (FGM/GC) is a form of gender-based violence and an attack on the rights and freedoms of girls and women in several countries of the world, including Portugal. With serious consequences for the physical and psychological health of women and girls who have been subjected to FGM/GC, it is now considered as a human rights and public health issue, unavoidable for most European countries that host migrant populations from the countries where FGM/GC is practiced. In this article, we will explore the magnitude and extent of the phenomenon, while analyzing the sociocultural contexts of FGM/GC, namely through interviews conducted with women residing in Portugal who were subjected to this harmful practice.
