História da assistência ao indígena no Ultramar Português

Abstract

A nossa expansão ultramarina caracterizou-se, desde o início, por um cuidado especial com a saúde física e moral das populações indígenas. A história da assistência aos indígenas nos territórios ultramarinos portugueses pode ser dividida nos seguintes períodos: 1º - Desde o início das Descobertas até à descoberta da rota marítima para a Índia. ou os comandantes das empresas tinham instruções específicas a este respeito, e onde se transplantaram para os locais que ocupámos nas ilhas do Atlântico e na costa ocidental africana as instituições de assistência portuguesas, prestando indistintamente auxílio a portugueses e indígenas. 2º. - Desde a descoberta da Rota Marítima para a Índia até à redução do Império Oriental, onde organizámos misericórdias semelhantes às do Reino, nos locais do Oriente que ocupamos e onde levámos a cabo uma notável política de assimilação, cujos resultados ainda persistem, não só nos pontos que ainda nos pertencem, mas também em alguns que já não nos pertencem. 3º. - Desde a redução do Império Oriental até a Independência do Brasil, que foi valorizada sobretudo pela mão de obra africana, transportada com cuidados sanitários relativos e sem colonos europeus, trouxemos connosco as Misericórdias, onde se tratava indistintamente brancos e negros, e que ainda existem no Brasil. 3º. - Desde a redução do Império Oriental até a Independência do Brasil, que foi valorizada sobretudo pela mão de obra africana, transportada com cuidados sanitários relativos e sem colonos europeus, trouxemos connosco as Misericórdias, onde se tratava indistintamente brancos e negros, e que ainda existem no Brasil.

The assistance to the natives was formerly to the charge of the Missions but after the foundation of the School of Tropical Medicine, in 1902, the Services of the Assistance of the State have been extended throughout the Portuguese Overseas. Now they have the most modern and perfect institutions and equipment as well as the most competent and learned staff
