Reflexões sobre a tradução de literatura luso-americana: o caso paradigmático de "Nossa Senhora das Alcachofras"

Abstract

A presente dissertação contempla, como ponto de partida, a apresentação de uma proposta de tradução do conto “Our Lady of the Artichokes”, presente na obra Our Lady of the Artichokes and Other Portuguese-American Stories, da autora americana com ascendência portuguesa, Katherine Vaz. Esta autora luso-americana proporciona um encontro entre o Novo e o Velho Mundo, com a inclusão nos seus textos de marcas da sua língua e cultura de herança — palavras, expressões, costumes e tradições da cultura portuguesa — na sua obra escrita em inglês, causando estranhamento ao público-alvo norte-americano. Assim, o exercício tradutório torna-se ainda mais exigente, sendo necessário que o tradutor encontre um equilíbrio entre as estratégias de tradução, para que o estranhamento não seja perdido. Inserido nos Estudos de Tradução, este projecto apresenta, em primeiro lugar, a vida e a obra da autora, fazendo posteriormente a ligação com a produção literária luso-americana. Em segundo lugar, pretende reflectir sobre as questões relacionadas com o heterolinguismo, a tradução entre culturas, a tradução de literatura e de literatura luso-americana, e ainda como o tradutor pode lidar com estas situações. Pretende, em terceiro lugar, analisar as marcas da cultura de partida e as da cultura de chegada, analisar os problemas causados pelo texto de partida, apresentar os problemas de tradução e justificar as respectivas estratégias e opções tradutórias.

This project has, as its starting core, a translation proposal of the short story “Our Lady of the Artichokes” collected in the book Our Lady of the Artichokes and Other Portuguese-American Stories by the American author with Portuguese descent, Katherine Vaz. This Portuguese-American author brings together both the New World and the Old World in her works written in English, including features from the heritage language and culture — such as Portuguese words and expressions and customs and traditions from the Portuguese culture — causing strangeness to a North-American target audience. Thus, the translation process becomes much more demanding, because the translator needs to find a balance between the translation strategies so that the strangeness is not lost. 5 Within the framework of Translation Studies the dissertation presents, first of all, Katherine Vaz’s life and work linked with a survey of Portuguese-American literature. Secondly, it reflects on issues dealing with heterolingualism, translation between cultures and translation of literature and of Portuguese-American literature and how the translator can deal with similar situations. Thirdly, it aims to analyse the features from the source and target cultures, to analyse the problems caused by the source text, to present the translation problems and to justify translational options and strategies.
