According to the Global Terrorism Index 2025, the Sahel remains the global epicentre of terrorism, accounting for over half of all terrorism-related deaths in 2024 (Global Terrorism Index, 2025). However, despite significant research on terrorism, women’s role remains understudied. The primary purpose of this thesis is to address this gap in knowledge by analysing women’s participation, operational role, and experience within terrorist groups in the Sahel. To provide a comparative perspective on women’s
engagement in terrorism, three focus groups will be analysed: Al Qaeda, Boko Haram, and Daesh.
This thesis will utilise a qualitative approach based on desk research. Due to the challenges associated with data collection in conflict zones, this research relies on secondary sources and original organisational charts to clarify the complex dynamics and affiliations of these terrorist groups in this specific region. The main results and findings highlight significant differences in how women are involved across these organisations and the need for further investigation. Investigation into this topic will advance academic knowledge and address the gender dimensions in counterterrorism studies.
De acordo com o Global Terrorism Index 2025, o Sahel continua a ser o epicentro global do terrorismo, representando mais de metade das mortes relacionadas com o terrorismo em 2024 (Global terrorism index, 2025). No entanto, o papel das mulheres permanece subexplorado. O objetivo desta tese é colmatar essa lacuna no mundo académico , através de uma análise comparativa sobre o papel das mulheres nos grupos terroristas no Sahel, com foco em três grupos: Al Qaeda, Boko Haram e Daesh.
Esta tese utilizará uma abordagem qualitativa baseada em pesquisa documental. Devido aos desafios associados à recolha de dados em zonas de conflito, esta pesquisa depende de fontes secundárias e de organogramas originais para esclarecer as dinâmicas e afiliações complexas destes grupos terroristas nesta região específica. Os principais resultados e descobertas destacam diferenças significativas sobre como as mulheres estão envolvidas nestes grupos e a necessidade de mais investigação. O estudo deste tema avançará o conhecimento académico e abordará as dimensões de género nos estudos de contraterrorismo.
