(Re)Traduzir e (Re)editar os clássicos da literatura - o caso de Wuthering Heights

Abstract

Em Portugal, as atividades de tradução e edição de livros estrangeiros possuem relvância para a construção do catálogo nacional disponível. Embora exista divulgação e acesso amplos a obras consideradas clássicos da literatura, as editoras nacionais continuam a apostar em novas traduções e edições deste tipo de títulos. A presente dissertação pretende versar sobre as motivações que explicam o surgimento destas (re)iterações, bem como sobre os principais tipos de alterações verificáveis e o impacto que estas exercem na experiência de leitura. Através da consulta de fontes bibliográficas relevantes e de um estudo de caso baseado na comparação entre duas edições de Wuthering Heights (de Emily Brontë) publicadas pela editora Relógio D’Água, será possível evidenciar os tipos de modificações que são efetuadas aquando de uma reedição de um texto clássico, os objetivos editoriais que estas revelam e como, apesar de se tratar do mesmo texto clássico publicado pela mesma editora, o leitor terá à sua frente dois livros distintos.

In Portugal, the translation and publishing of foreign books is relevant for the constructions of the national catalogue. Even though there is widespread dissemination of and easy access to works considered literary classics, national publishers continue to invest in new translations and editions of this type of book. This dissertation aims to analyse the motivations behind the emergence of these (re)iterations, as well as the main types of changes that can be seen and the impact they may have on the reading experience. By consulting relevant bibliographical sources and carrying out a case study based on a comparison between two editions of Wuthering Heights (by Emily Brontë) published by Relógio D'Água, it will be possible to understand the types of changes that are made when a classic text is re-published, the editorial objectives these changes reveal and how, even if it is the same classic work published by the same publisher, the reader will be faced with two different books.
