Abstract

Neste artigo analisamos o período da primeira onda de greves em Portugal relacionando-as com a situação histórica internacional, em particular a crise econômica da grande depressão de 1870, a fundação da Associação Internacional dos Trabalhadores – a Fraternidade Operária – nesse período, a revolução ibérica de 1868. A partir de 1870, Portugal conhece a greve, que, mesmo reprimida, restringida ou proibida de fato até 1974, nunca mais deixará o panorama social contemporâneo. Uma das características fundamentais da produção capitalista, desde então, é a paragem da produção pelos trabalhadores. Que condições se criaram para que uma nova palavra tenha surgido no léxico social, e, pese embora a dureza da repressão que sobre os trabalhadores se abateu, nunca mais tenha deixado a realidade social? In this article we analyze the period of the first wave of labor strikes in Portugal, relating them to the international situation, in particular, the economic crisis of the great depression of 1870, the foundation of the International Workingmen’s Association – the Fraternidade Operária – in that period, the Iberian revolution of 1868. From 1870 onwards, Portugal has known the labor strike, which, even if repressed, restricted, or actually prohibited until 1974, will never again leave the contemporary social panorama. One of the fundamental characteristics of capitalist production, since then, is the stoppage of production by workers. What conditions were created for a new word to emerge in the social lexicon, and, despite the harshness of the repression that hit the workers, never again left social reality?
