Esquecer e lembrar o Vulcão dos Capelinhos: Cinema, memória e retrato

Abstract

Este trabalho de projeto é teórico-prático e tem como objetivo entender como é possível retratar, com o cinema, uma memória em esquecimento de um acontecimento traumático. Através da realização de um filme sobre as memórias dos meus avós sobre o Vulcão dos Capelinhos, na ilha do Faial, levantar-se-ão questões teóricas e filosóficas sobre a representação da memória em formato áudio-visual. O mote do projeto parte do som, dos relatos em primeira pessoa dos meus avós, das falhas de memória, do esquecimento que de dia para dia aumenta, sem querer se focar na demência de que ambos padecem. Este projeto procura perceber que imagens se podem associar aos depoimentos, sem os ilustrar, ou fazer um retrato apenas histórico do acontecimento. Pretende retratar o esquecimento pessoal em paralelo com a transformação da paisagem e do efeito do tempo sobre os arquivos físicos relativos à erupção – o crescimento de fungos. Utiliza-se o arquivo não como fonte de narrativa, mas como evidência do esquecimento pelo seu deterioramento. O trabalho tem também como objetivo entender os Capelinhos como paisagem (Simmel) e ainda como outros filmes (L’homme atlantique – Marguerite Durase e Blue – Derek Jarman) quebram a correspondência entre som e imagem, problematizando a representação da memória no cinema, através da montagem.

This project work is theoretical and practical and aims to understand how it is possible to portray, with cinema, a memory in oblivion of a traumatic event. Through the making of a film about my grandparents' memories of the Volcano of Capelinhos, on the island of Faial, theoretical and philosophical questions will be raised about the representation of memory in audio-visual format. The motto of the project starts through sound, through the first-person accounts of my grandparents, of the gaps in their memory, of the forgetfulness that increases day by day, without focusing on the dementia they both have. This project seeks to understand which images can be associated with the testimonies without illustrating them or making a historical portrait of the event. It intends to portray personal forgetfulness in parallel with the transformation of the landscape and the effect of time on the physical archives of the eruption - the growth of fungus. The archive is used not as a source of narrative, but as evidence of forgetting through its deterioration. The work also aims to understand Capelinhos as landscape (Simmel) and how other films (L’homme atlantique – Marguerite Durase and Blue – Derek Jarman) break the correspondence between sound and image, problematizing the representation of memory in cinema through editing.
