Os répteis na obra de Mário de Carvalho

Abstract

O elo que une literatura e ambiente surge, cada vez mais, como uma realidade indubitável, não sendo, contudo, apanágio dos textos coevos, pois essa figuração surge em textos antiquíssimos. O presente ensaio centra-se na inserção dos répteis na geografia literária de Mário de Carvalho, a que subjaz uma tripla intenção: retratar o habitat natural em que se movem e que papel desempenham estes bichos, ao nível dos ecossistemas, com o claro intuito de levar os humanos a refletir sobre a consciência ambiental. Num segundo nível, e na esteira dos bestiários antigos, a presença dos répteis anuncia um intuito moralizante, surgindo como metáfora dos comportamentos repreensíveis e desviantes dos humanos. Mas a representação destes animais, enquanto seres fantásticos, de compleições híbridas e aterrorizadoras assume, igualmente, um papel simbólico ou alegórico. Irrompendo de forma assombrosa no quotidiano, emergem como aparições estranhas e sobrenaturais, facilmente relegadas, ou dessacralizam a coorte celestial representada na iconografia cristã. The link that unites literature and environment is, more and more, an undoubted reality; however, it is not a prerogative of the contemporary texts, because this figuration appears in ancient texts. This essay focuses on the insertion of reptiles in Mário de Carvalho’s literary geography, which underlies a triple intention: to portray the natural habitat in which they move and what role these animals play, in terms of ecosystems, with the clear intention of leading humans to reflect on environmental awareness. On a second level, and in the wake of the old bestiaries, the presence of reptiles announces a moralizing purpose, emerging as a metaphor for the reprehensible and deviant behaviors of humans. But the representation of these animals as fantastic beings, of hybrid and terrifying complexions, assumes, equally, a symbolic or allegorical role. Bursting in an astonishing way in the daily lives of human beings, they desecrate the figures of the celestial cohort of Christian iconography, or appear only as easily relegated strange and anomalous apparitions.
