The production of tortoiseshell objects in Gujarat, in the 16th and 17th centuries, is one of the most important artistic productions of the period when the first traders and navigators penetrated the space of Asia and came into contact with the societies and productions established there. Despite the uniqueness and importance of this production, contemporary historiography has not yet dedicated an in-depth and comprehensive study to this topic that seeks to define more rigorously the methods of production of these objects and the relations of circulation and consumption inherent to them. Through the contributions of several national and international authors that have been known in the last decades, we tried to organize and synthesize them in a way to define a concise and easy to comprehend State of the Art. The analysis of sources from the time and from periods prior to the arrival of the Portuguese will not only allow to understand how and where these objects are produced in the 16th and 17th centuries, but it will also establish this type of production in their geographical and chronological terms. Through the analysis of consumption issues, we seek to illustrate how this Asian production has adapted, and has been adapted, to a European context that was in frank geographic, social, and cultural expansion.
