Raul Lino (1879-1974) is a frequently included architect in the discussion and studies surrounding architecture in Portugal in the first quarter of the 20th Century, particularly in the debate known as “Questão da Casa Portuguesa”. Nonetheless, the insertion of the architect and his later biographical course and artistic works hasn’t been expanded nor revised in the international historiography of art. If on the one hand Raul Lino is the best proponent of the almost isolationist national quality in architecture works made in Portugal, on the other, he is also one of the most knowledgeable and adaptative artistic and architectonic European creators between the 30s and 40s of the 20th Century. In this dissertation, we will focus on Raul Lino’s architectonic work from 1939, located in Rua Feio Terenas in Lisbon, Portugal. Through the successive mentioning of various biographical facts and artistic testimonies, we develop several associations that blend the architect’s production from the decades of 1930 and 1940 in to the European artistic outline of that time. The tangencies of this specific work and the artist himself will be spotlighted in relation to the German and Italian artistic philosophies and architecture his contemporary. Moreover, this analysis won’t ignore the theorical foundations established by Raul Lino in the earlier stages of his career. The present investigation is consolidated through the referencing of Raul Lino’s work and his personal course in the second quarter of the 20th Century, investing in the revaluation of the histography of art relative to this architect, but also the remaining European artistic outline contemporary to the making to this dissertation’s subject.
