Depois da Índia. Regresso, morte e posteridade de Gonçalo Gil Barbosa

Abstract

A morte de Gonçalo Gil Barbosa deu origem ao processo de avaliação, inventário e partilhas dos seus bens. Partindo do livro que resultou deste esforço foi possível começar a traçar informação não só sobre a família Barbosa, mas também sobre os seus comportamentos. A elaboração do inventário e partilhas inseriu-se num contexto específico após o regresso de Gonçalo Gil Barbosa da Índia, estadia na qual tinham surgido diferentes oportunidades de protagonismo dentro dos vários conflitos e eventos ocorridos na costa do Malabar. Gonçalo Gil desempenhara o papel de feitor de Cochim, o qual lhe permitiu moldar alguns acontecimentos, bem como estabelecer contactos com redes mercantis internacionais. Esta conjuntura permitiu-lhe, sobretudo, a construção de uma fortuna que seria importante para a adaptação da família em novos palcos consequentes do sucesso na Índia. Pretendemos que este estudo preencha lacunas historiográficas relativamente aos conhecimentos existentes sobre Gonçalo Gil Barbosa e a sua família. Além das biografias que revelam novos dados, realizamos uma primeira análise do Livro de Inventário, na qual temos como objectivo a análise dos comportamentos, hábitos e investimentos do grupo familiar, reforçando o conhecimento sobre as acções e modos de vida de famílias que foram privilegiadas pelas suas acções em terras distantes. Através da análise deste Livro de Inventário e do seu cruzamento com outras fontes e bibliografia, foi possível acrescentar informação àquela disponível e actualizar dados sobre a família.

Gonçalo Gil Barbosa’s death set off the process of evaluation, inventory and share of his assets. From the book that resulted from this project, it was possible to start delineating information not only about the Barbosa family, but also about their overall behavior. This happens in a specific context after Gonçalo Gil Barbosa’s return from India, where several decisive opportunities arose within the conflicts and events that occurred in Malabar’s coastline. There, he executed the function of trade post overseer of Cochim, which gave him the chance to shape certain events, as well as to establish contacts with international trade networks. This context allowed the gathering of wealth which would be important for the adaptation of the family in their new stages of action, consequential of the success in India. In this study we intent to fill in the historiographical gaps regarding what we already know about Gonçalo Gil Barbosa and his family. Beside the biographies that show new data about the family, we carried out an initial analysis of the Livro de Inventário, where our goal is to analyze the behavior, habits, and investments of the family, reinforcing our knowledge about the actions and lifestyles of families that were privileged by their actions in faraway lands. It’s through the analysis of this Livro de Inventário and its interlacement with other documental sources and bibliography that it was possible to add information to what was already available and update data about the family.
