Republicanismo a Sul do Tejo na imprensa local, 1907-1913

Abstract

O presente trabalho recorre à imprensa local publicada na margem Sul do Tejo nos anos que antecederam a implantação da República em Portugal e nos imediatamente subsequentes (1907-1913), fazendo um levantamento dos indícios que nas páginas da mesma evidenciavam a eventual força do movimento republicano, quer no país, quer a nível local, permitindo-nos ler as reacções que ali reflectiam o que no plano nacional se sucedia neste período conturbado da vida do país. Tendo a imprensa local como um espelho da realidade dos locais onde era publicada, podemos através da sua leitura perceber os conflitos, preocupações, atitudes e tomadas de posição dos nossos conterrâneos, nomeadamente o antagonismo entre indivíduos com visões políticas opostas que actuavam em localidades de reduzida dimensão, inseridas numa região delimitada. Os conteúdos relevados reconduzem-se essencialmente a três “questões” que então agitavam o país, sendo, à época, problematizadas da seguinte forma: a “questão religiosa”, a “questão social” e a “questão política”. Sob a primeira, caberão os indícios de anticlericalismo e animosidade ao clero que encontrámos ao longo das páginas dos jornais locais; na segunda, inserimos assuntos que se reconduziam à temática da luta por melhores condições de vida dos cidadãos e, em especial, da classe operária (o que nos levará a analisar a problemática da greve, abundantemente referenciada nas páginas da imprensa local), cabendo ainda aqui a análise de temas que iam desde o papel da mulher na sociedade à educação, passando até, por uma determinada visão republicana sobre a tauromaquia; no âmbito da “questão política”, assumindo como fio condutor da nossa exposição, os conteúdos relacionados com os diversos actos eleitorais que no período analisado tiveram lugar, caberá uma leitura da forma como transparecia alguma desilusão com a República, relacionada com a política repressiva do governo, finalisticamente orientado para um reconhecimento internacional do regime, sendo relacionável com este aspecto, uma leitura da relação conflitual entre os grupos resultantes da cisão do Partido Republicano. Assim, através da imprensa local – muita da qual, assumia uma clara posição política – podemos perceber como os assuntos que agitavam aquele período da I República eram debatidos, sendo muitos deles usados como “arma de arremesso” entre as facções republicanas (ou entre republicanos e os grupos que estiveram ao seu lado no derrube da monarquia) que se digladiavam nos planos nacionais e locais, dando-nos a conhecer o aspecto plurifacetado daquele movimento.

This work addresses the material published in the local press on the South bank of the Tagus River in the years immediately before the establishment of the Republic in Portugal, but also in the immediately subsequent ones (1907-1913), with the aim of drawing evidence from its pages of the eventual republican strength on a national and local level, thus allowing us to understand the reactions at a local-level to the events that had an impact on the nation, during this troubled period in the history of the country. Interpreting the examples from the local press as a mirror of the reality lived in the towns where the latter were published, we may have a tool to fully understand the conflicts, concerns, attitudes, and stances of our fellow citizens, namely, the opposition between individuals with antagonistic views that lived together and acted in small-sized towns, located within a region that played a critical role in the republican revolution. The researched contents can be divided into three groups of issues that troubled the Portuguese society of that time – the religious issues; the social issues; and the political issues. On the first one we can fit the evidence for anticlericalism or the animosity towards the catholic church found in the local newspapers; on the second one, we find the issues that are somehow related to the subject of the citizens’ struggle for a better life (specially the workers’ struggle), also analysing the reflections on subjects such as the role of women in society, education, and the republican views on strikes. We also inserted in this chapter some of the evidence that showcased the republican view on bullfighting; finally, on the matter of political issues, having the elections that took place during the chronological frame under analysis to guide us, we also analysed the perceived disillusion with the Republic and the conflictual relations between the different groups originated by the schism within the Republican Party. Through the local newspapers – many of which took clear political stances – we can perceive how the subjects that agitated the 1st Republic were discussed and used as arguments in the war between republican factions (and between the republicans and those that fought along with them against the monarchists) both at a national and local level, providing us with an insight on the multifaceted aspect of republicanism.
