Wynonna Earp: An Atypical Western Representation

Abstract

This dissertation deals mainly with Beau Smith’s Wynonna Earp (1997), a comic series, as part of the reevaluation the western genre has been going through. The American West, a space where men dominate and very few women have been allowed in, is also a main focus, since some female characters who have been undermined and others who have thrived will be scrutinized in works such as The Virginian (1902) by Owen Wister, Westworld (2016) by Jonathan Nolan and more extensively, Wynonna Earp, in mediums such as comics and television.Likewise, the social and political changes brought on with time will be at the core of this work as they help to elucidate and describe how the western has been evolving in the way it represents women and allowing them to become heroes in a space and narrative where the figure of the cowboy has been idolized and mythicized in American history. Wynonna Earp demonstrates the progressive ideas of our time and shows how persistence might be central to change.

Esta dissertação analisa primordialmente Wynonna Earp (1997), uma banda desenhada da autoria de Beau Smith, como parte da reavaliação de que o western tem sido alvo. O Oeste americano, um espaço maioritariamente representado como masculino, onde poucas mulheres têm sido deixadas entrar, vai ser igualmente um dos enfoques, visto que será analisado como algumas das figuras femininas têm sido estereotipadas e outras conseguiram desenvolver-se em obras como The Virginian (1902) de Owen Wister, Westworld (2016), de Jonathan Nolan, e principalmente Wynonna Earp, em géneros como a banda desenhada e a televisão. Além disto, momentos políticos e sociais considerados fulcrais vão estar presentes, sendo analisados em conjunto com o mencionado anteriormente, pois elucidam e ajudam a descrever como é que o western tem vindo a evoluir na forma como representa a figura feminina e como tem criado, cada vez mais, narrativas com heroínas. Assim, Wynonna Earp vem, ao mesmo tempo, revelar ideias inovadoras do nosso tempo e mostrar que a persistência tem sido fundamental para a mudança.
