The Heroine´s Journey: Female Rendition of the Monomyth in Catherine Fisher´s The Clockwork Crow Series

Abstract

A presente dissertação visa explorar construções do monomito que representam a jornada heróica no feminino. Para tal, começa-se por analisar a forma como as figuras femininas têm sido retratadas e os papéis que têm vindo a ocupar no mundo do mito, dando especial ênfase às heroínas de conto de fadas. De seguida, realça-se a obra de Valerie Frankel, From Girl to Goddess: The Heroine's Journey through Myth and Legend (2010), um modelo da jornada heróica no feminino, que se baseia em The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949) de Joseph Campbell. Através da comparação das duas obras, pretende-se demonstrar que as jornadas masculina e feminina são intrinsecamente diferentes, mas igualmente heróicas. Para sustentar este argumento, a dissertação assenta na análise da jornada de Seren Rhys, a protagonista da série The Clockwork Crow. Ao tomar esta heroína como exemplo, estudando as suas características e a sua jornada e comparando-a com outras heroínas, torna-se possível alcançar uma melhor compreensão da forma como as heroínas são construídas. O que, por sua vez, permite esclarecer o que significa falar de um monomito feminino e a sua importância.

This dissertation aims to explore constructions of the monomyth that render the heroic journey in the feminine. To do so, the study starts by looking at how female figures have been portrayed and the roles they have occupied in the world of myth, giving special attention to fairy-tale heroines. It then focuses on Valerie Frankel’s From Girl to Goddess: The Heroine’s Journey through Myth and Legend (2010), a model of the female heroic journey based on Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces (1949). By comparing the two works, the goal is to demonstrate that the male and female journeys are inherently different but equally heroic. To back up this argument, the dissertation is rooted in the analysis of the journey of Seren Rhys, the protagonist of The Clockwork Crow series. By taking this heroine as an example, studying her characteristics and her journey, and comparing her to other heroines, it becomes possible to reach a deeper understanding of how female heroines are constructed. Thus, allowing to clarify what it means to talk about a female monomyth and its importance.
