A Sul, O Cerro e o Mar: O Algarve na Obra de David Wright e Patrick Swift

Abstract

O Algarve é uma região escassamente contemplada nos relatos de viajantes anglófonos que visitaram Portugal ao longo dos séculos, sendo as condições de acessibilidade um dos principais fatores de exclusão do Algarve destas rotas. O início do século XX trouxe visibilidade à região através de diversos autores – de Aubrey Bell a John Gibbons. O “Paradise of Algarve”, como o poeta romântico Robert Southey caracterizara a região, manteve-se esse corolário de paisagem exótica e intocada até à década de 60 do século XX. O Aeroporto de Faro foi inaugurado em julho de 1965, tendo sido, simultaneamente, causa e consequência das grandes alterações verificadas no panorama turístico, incluindo a notória transição da presença da figura do viajante para a do turista e as modificações sofridas pela paisagem urbana e rural, física e do Algarve. Em 1965, ano em se opera uma enorme viragem no que viria a ser o futuro da região, foi publicada em Londres, pela Barrie & Rockliff, a obra intitulada Algarve – a Portrait and Guide, da autoria de David Wright e Patrick Swift, ali visitante e visitado, respetivamente, cuja amizade se iniciara no Soho do pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial. Este retrato e guia, como o título sugere, escrito a quatro mãos, é inédito na sua dimensão estilística e temática, bem como ao nível do histórico biográfico dos seus autores. O objetivo da presente dissertação é a divulgação da obra conjunta de David Wright e Patrick Swift, através da análise das imagens literárias que resultam do seu olhar sobre a região algarvia da época e da compreensão do seu impacto na comunidade, oferecendo uma reflexão sobre a influência do Outro e os primórdios da turistificação da presença estrangeira no Algarve.

Algarve is a region scarcely envisaged in Anglophone travel accounts, the facilities and infrastructures being one of the main exclusion factors. The beginning of the 20th century gave Algarve visibility through many authors – from Aubrey Bell to John Gibbons. The “Paradise of Algarve”, so called in the words of the Romantic poet Robert Southey, remained the corollary of exotic and untouched landscape until the 1960. The Faro Airport was inaugurated on July 11, in 1965. Simultaneously, it was cause and consequence of the major changes occurred in the touristic panorama, including the notorious transition from the traveller figure onto the tourist one, alongside with the modifications registered on the Algarvian urban and rural landscape. In 1965, the year of an enormous turn on the shaping of Algarve’s future, Barrie & Rockliff published Algarve – a Portrait and a Guide, by David Wright and Patrick Swift, visitor and visited, whose friendship started in the post-Second World War Soho. This portrait and guide, as the title suggests, written at four hands, is unique in its stylistic and thematic dimension, as well as at the authors’ biography level. The purpose of this dissertation is to enlighten the joint work of David Wright and Patrick Swift, through the analysis of literary images derived from their look onto the Algarvian region at the time, by comprehending its impact within the community, thus offering a reflection on the Other’s influence and the early days of the foreign presence touristification in Algarve.
