Resumo: New reading experiences grow in digital narratives; however, the unchanged article for mat has continued for four centuries. Scientific publication adapts the practices of the printed page to digital publication, failing to explore the integration of dynamic content in the body of the article. In this sense, this Ph.D. research in Digital Media explores how to provide the integration of interactive multimedia features in scientific publications with the available digital technologies, affording the researcher a consistent and visual layout, directed towards non-linear reading. The contribution is characterized by the creation of a model to guide the design team of publishers to create an innovative and rich scientific publication. To offer a possible relationship between the researcher and the publication, there is a factor of change for the current publishing interface. This occurs through an interactive experience that visually directs the researcher to explore the con tent present in the sections and beyond. This model is developed to fill the gap found in the state of art and the analysis of current publications. To address these concerns, cognitive studies were applied in conjunction with the UI design. Still, an approach to the UX with a focus on the multiple phases of the participatory design process contributes to fulfilling the researchers’ demands, discussing solutions, and highlighting changes. Thus, a model was created to attend these concerns and add to the impact of the stud ies. Its validation presents a rich contribution to drive changes in scientific publications. Through a triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data, the results demonstrate that the model can guide the researchers’ eye to a correlation between the contents. Although, the interactivity of the multimedia features can also affect the participants’ average ir relevant eye fixation and its duration. Moreover, in comparison with the article read in the print-based format, a model with an applied web-based format brings enrichments to increased knowledge acquisition, according to the studied sample. The results also show that the model enables participant engagement (x¯ = 4.1), significant knowledge attain ment, and positive feedback when interacting with the model applied to the prototyp.
