Comportamentos e modelos informacionais da geração Google: contributos para o perfil das gestoras e curadoras de informação em Portugal

Abstract

O comportamento informacional (C.Info) é um tema que tem vindo a ser estudado sob várias perspetivas e áreas do conhecimento, constituindo uma preocupação dos investigadores o modo como os seres humanos procuram e usam a informação. Por seu turno, a área da Ciência da Informação (CI) tem vindo a dedicar-se a este tipo de estudos desde a década de 1940 e, a partir de 1980, os seus estudos passaram a ser focados nos C.Info dos seres humanos e, consequente, nos C.Info quotidianos. Partindo das evidências do C.Info de mulheres trabalhadoras-estudantes do Mestrado em gestão e curadoria da informação (GCI), explora-se o comportamento destas no seu contexto e meio ambiente, através de processos de categorização das várias etapas dos modelos de C.Info por elas elaborados. Além da relevância que estes assumem no delinear do perfil das futuras gestoras e curadoras de informação em Portugal, graças à inferência das suas competências e habilidades. A análise comparativa realizada entre as gerações que compõem a amostra deste estudo - geração Y (nascidas entre 1978-1993) e geração Google (nascidas entre 1994 até aos anos 2000) - permitiu estabelecer as diferenças e semelhanças entre elas. Procurou-se ainda analisar se a GCI poderá ser uma profissão do futuro. Utilizou-se para tal um enquadramento teórico-conceptual informado pela CI e pela produção bibliográfica sobre C.Info interpretada à luz da GCI. Quanto aos procedimentos metodológicos, esta dissertação configura-se como um estudo de caso de carácter exploratório-descritivo e de natureza qualitativa, com análise documental e comparativa dos modelos de CI realizados por dez Estudantes mulheres do mestrado em GCI e pertencentes a duas gerações supostamente distintas. O estudo dos modelos de C.Info, com especial enfoque nos da geração Google, revela o quão esta geração está dependente da tecnologia e dos ecrãs, assim como da Internet como meio de comunicação. Isto é especialmente visível na procura de informação em que as fontes de informação informais preenchem o seu quotidiano e a seleção e validação das fontes de informação não é um processo tido em conta no seu comportamento. Conclui-se que as futuras gestoras e curadoras de informação em Portugal possuem perfis híbridos com competências transversais e interdisciplinares. Não obstante, estas características verificam-se também nas Estudantes da geração Y, as quais pertencem ao mesmo tipo social que as Estudantes da geração Google, inferindo-se que com a globalização e a era da Internet não se afigura tão relevante a geração em que nascem, mas o “small world” a que pertencem (Chatman, 2000).

Information behaviour is a subject matter that has been studied from multiples perspectives and fields of knowledge. Furthermore, the researchers are concerned with the way human beings seek and use information. The Information Science field has been dedicated to this topic since the 1940s and, since 1980, it started to be focused on the information behaviour of human beings and, consequently, in the daily information behaviour. Based on the information behaviour evidence of female worker-students of the master’s in management and information curation, it was explored their behaviour in their context and environment, through processes of categorization of the various stages of the information behaviour models produced by them. Also, the relevance it assumes in outlining the profile of future information managers and curators in Portugal, due to the inference of their skills and abilities. The comparative analysis carried out between the generations that integrates the analised sample of this study - generation Y (born between 1978-1993) and generation Google (born between 1994 until the 2000s) - allowed to establish the differences and similarities between them. It also sought to analyse whether information management and curation could be a profession of the future. A theoretical-conceptual framework portrayed by Information Science and by the bibliographic production on information behaviour interpreted according to information management and curation was used in this dissertation. As for the methodological procedures, it is a case study with an exploratory-descriptive character and a qualitative nature, with a documental and comparative analysis of the information behaviour models carried out by ten female students of the master's degree belonging to two generations supposedly different. The study of information behaviour models, with a special focus on those of the Google generation, reveals how this generation is dependent on technology and screens, as well as on the Internet as a means of communication. This is especially visible in the search for information in which informal sources of information fill their daily lives, and the selection and validation of sources of information is not a process considered in their behaviour. It is concluded that future information managers and curators in Portugal have hybrid profiles with transversal and interdisciplinary skills. Nevertheless, these characteristics can also be seen in Generation Y students, who belong to the same social environment as Google Generation students. It implies that, with the globalization and the Internet era, the generation in which they are born is not as important as the “small world” to which they belong (Chatman, 2000).
