Resumo(s)
This paper aims to better understand the factors which determine pharmaceutical
expenditure. The variables used to explain pharmaceutical expenditure are: income;
ageing; public financing; number of physicians; number of deaths per 100 thousand
people; public delivery; urbanization, and price control policy. The model used includes
not only pharmaceutical expenditure in PPP dollars but also pharmaceutical share in
GDP and in health expenditure. We will also address the growth rate of pharmaceutical
expenditure. At the end we will observe that GDP has a positive effect, just as it does in
health expenditure, and that the existence of public reimbursement and public integrated
systems increase pharmaceutical expenditure.
