Parasynthetics are the type of complex words which have received less attention in Portuguese . However, for recent models of morphological analysis, parasynthesis has become a crucial problem. In this short paper, the traditional proposals (e.g. Said Ali [1931] 1964) will be confronted with other approaches, in particular those in which parasynthesis is understood as circumfixation (e.g. Pottier 1962, Booij 1977, Bosque 1982 and Rio-Torto 1994), or in which parasynthetics are not considered either (e.g., Aronoff 1976 and Scalise 1984). From the analysis of the structures a-X-ar, a-X-ejar and a-X-ecer, the complexity of parasynthetic derivation and, therefore, the difficulty of representing the products generated by this process of word formation, will be emphasized.
