A actual Missão que o Instituto de Medicina Tropical mantém em Cabo Verde desde Novembro de 1955 é a sequência lógica duma série de missões temporárias que o mesmo Instituto enviou a algumas ilhas da Província entre 1946 e 1954.
Tendo-se reconhecido o interesse científico e técnico dos trabalhos realizados por essas missões e as vantagens de ordem sanitária que adviriam para a população caboverdiana com o prosseguimento dos mesmos, decidiu o então Ministro do Ultramar, Senhor Comodoro Sarmento Rodrigues, sob proposta do Conselho Escolar do Instituto, criar a presente Missão Permanente (decreto n.º 40.077, de 4-III-955), cuja continuidade de acção proporcionaria a obtenção de melhores êxitos. Os objectivos fundamentais em vista eram continuar as pesquisas e estudos sobre as endemias reinantes, de modo especial a malária, em ordem a contribuir para o melhor conhecimento das mesmas e aperfeiçoar os métodos profiláticos a opôr-se-lhes.
The current mission that the Institute of Tropical Medicine has maintained in Cape Verde since November 1955 is the logical continuation of a series of temporary missions that the Institute sent to some of the islands in the province between 1946 and 1954. Having recognised the scientific and technical value of the work carried out by these missions and the health benefits that would accrue to the Cape Verdean population from their continuation, the then Minister for Overseas Territories, Mr Comodoro Sarmento Rodrigues, upon a proposal from the Institute’s Academic Council, to establish this Permanent Mission (Decree No. 40,077, of 4 March 1955), the continuity of which would ensure greater success. The fundamental objectives in mind were to continue research and studies into the prevailing endemic diseases, particularly malaria, in order to contribute to a better understanding of them and to improve the preventive methods to combat them.
