The “roaring 20s” were a time of complex social contrasts, characterized by a desire to break with traditional behaviors and values and by a wish to maintain and ensure social order and stability. The traditional bourgeois ideal of a pious, fragile, submissive, and inferior woman, confined to the domestic space, responsible for educating and molding good Christian patriots was confronted with a new model of a more autonomous, independent, dynamic, self-confident woman, determined to compete in a world predominantly controlled by men. This new woman was attracted by the latest fashions and was also eager to obtain more civic rights and a greater participation in political life through the right to vote. Through the analysis of satirical drawings of female figures, published by the Portuguese illustrated and satirical press between 1919 and 1929, we aim to understand the mentality and the ideology of that time and how were the traditional and modern concepts of feminine gender seen by the Portuguese mainstream media.pt_PT
