How did the European empires use the different forms of knowledge they produced to impose their own power and authority overseas? This article does not attempt to answer a question of such magnitude, but aims only to give a brief inventory of the modes of knowledge, associated with the dynamic of intellectual disciplines in Europe throughout the seventeenth century, which had a more direct impact on the organization of colonial empires.
